Grain-fed veal producers in Quebec are provided with a list of production standards and requirements so as to be able to offer consumers a product which meets the most rigorous of criteria for high quality. In order to obtain certified farm status, the producer must conform to all the production standards and requirements. It is only after these conditions, which are regularly checked by an inspector from the Fédération des producteurs de bovins du Québec (Quebec Federation of Beef Producers), are met that the product can be sold as Quebec Certified Grain-fed Veal.
Careful to give calves optimum growing conditions, the animal's welfare is taken into account all the way through the growth period, so the animal can achieve maximum growth and so that stress and risk of illness are reduced to a minimum.
When they arrive at the farm, each calf is identified with a pre-numbered ear tag. This process ensures the animal can be traced all through the production process up to the meat-counter at your grocery store.
Certification requires that calves be fed according to certain criteria to ensure the quality and uniformity of the final product:
- Milk rations from birth to 6 - 8 weeks, with a gradual, progressive introduction of corn and protein supplements;
- Corn seed and rations balanced in energy, proteins, vitamins and minerals until about 24 weeks.
It is thanks to this balanced diet that veal gets its pinkish colour, a sign of health and of good quality meat. Consumers are offered a choice, tender and tasty meat.
